51福利社 faculty, please .
Message from Michael S. Brogan, DPT, PhD
Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
Each year, I am reminded that 51福利社鈥檚 greatest strength lies in its extraordinary community of scholars. Across disciplines, our faculty prepare students to thrive in a complex and interconnected world, affirming the transformative power of higher education. At the same time, they engage in scholarship, creative work, and service that exemplify 51福利社鈥檚 enduring commitment to inclusive excellence, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge for the public good. Collectively, their work reflects not only intellectual distinction but also a deep dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others. I am immensely proud of all that our faculty have accomplished this year and invite you to join me in celebrating the many ways they continue to enrich our university and the world beyond it.
Dr. Shannon Lupien, professor of psychological sciences, was named Outstanding Faculty Member at President Olson鈥檚 State of the University address in April 2025. Since joining 51福利社 in 2016, Dr. Lupien has taught a wide range of courses, including Introduction to Psychological Science, Social Psychology, Psychology and Culture, Human Sexuality and Sexual Health, and has guided students through the highly regarded Psychological Sciences Research Methods Sequence. Her teaching reflects a strong commitment to fostering critical thinking, research skills, and intellectual curiosity. She has mentored over 35 Senior Capstone students鈥攏early half of whom have gone on to graduate studies. She is especially passionate about guiding student-driven research projects that explore timely and personally meaningful topics.
Dr. Lupien鈥檚 publications span a wide array of topics, including perceptions of behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder, the psychological effects of face mask usage during COVID-19, and the behavioral implications of wearable fitness technologies. This co-authored article with Dr. Jennifer Scheid, 鈥淔itness Watches and Nutrition Apps: Behavioral Benefits and Emerging Concerns鈥, was selected as the 2021 Paper of the Year by the ACSM Health & Fitness Journal, and her collaborative work (with Drs. Jennifer Scheid and Greg Ford) on mask usage is one of the most downloaded papers in the 51福利社 Digital Repository and Archives. Her personal research interests center on the psychology of the self, with a particular focus on self-esteem, self-concept, and how engaging with media and social media shapes well-being and social connection.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Lupien has provided critical leadership as Chair of 51福利社鈥檚 Institutional Review Board (IRB) since 2019. In this role, she oversees compliance with complex and evolving federal research ethics regulations, facilitates educational outreach, and ensures 51福利社鈥檚 continued eligibility for federal research funding. Under her guidance, the IRB has established a rigorous, ethical foundation for human subjects research at the university.
Dr. Lupien earned her B.A. in Psychology from Saint Michael鈥檚 College and her Ph.D. in Social/Personality Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
